The US Independent Advisor Market in 2026: Growth, Consolidation, and the Private-Markets Shift

January 20, 2026 · 8 min read · EbixMeridian Editorial
In brief
  • The RIA channel keeps taking share as advisors leave wirehouses for independence.
  • Record M&A and a retiring advisor generation are consolidating the industry from both ends.
  • Advisory capacity is the binding constraint; technology-driven productivity is the lever.
  • Private-markets demand is an opportunity that arrives wrapped in operational burden.

Three forces define the independent advisory landscape in 2026, and they push in different directions. Independence keeps growing. Consolidation keeps accelerating. And client portfolios keep tilting toward private markets. A firm's strategy for the next five years is largely a bet on how these three interact.

Independence keeps winning

The registered investment advisor channel has taken share from wirehouses and broker-dealers for more than a decade, and the count of SEC-registered firms sits at record levels above fifteen thousand. The drivers have not changed: advisors want ownership of their client relationships, better economics, and freedom from product mandates. What has changed is the supporting infrastructure. Custody, compliance support, and technology that once required a large institution behind them are now available to a two-person firm.

Consolidation from both ends

At the same time, RIA mergers and acquisitions have run at record pace for several consecutive years, comfortably above two hundred transactions annually, with private-equity-backed aggregators setting the tempo. Demographics reinforce the trend: industry research consistently finds that roughly a third of advisors expect to retire within the next decade, and a large share have no written succession plan. Every firm without one is a future seller, and buyers know it.

The capacity crunch

Demand for advice is growing faster than the supply of advisors. Industry studies project a shortfall of advisors reaching into the tens of thousands by the early 2030s. For a practice, that means growth will not come from hiring alone. It comes from capacity per advisor: how many households one professional can serve well. That is a technology question. Firms that eliminate manual assembly, automate administration, and let clients self-serve routine requests can serve materially more households at the same service standard.

The private-markets shift

Client demand for private equity, private credit, and other alternatives has moved from niche to mainstream, helped along by the 2025 policy opening toward alternatives in retirement plans. For advisory firms this is a genuine differentiator and a genuine operational load. Subscription documents, accreditation, capital calls, distributions, K-1 season, and audit-ready records all land on the firm. Firms that industrialize this work win the business. Firms that run it on spreadsheets discover the cost of the opportunity.

What winning firms are doing

Consolidating the stack

One client record across CRM, planning, and operations, so capacity scales without headcount.

Industrializing private markets

Purpose-built offering, commitment, and tax-document workflows instead of spreadsheets.

Putting AI on the desk

Document review, meeting preparation, and reporting handled by agents, confirmed by humans.

Writing the succession plan

Clean data and documented process raise firm value whether the plan is to sell or to endure.
